About Us

MADS – Markayte Amateur Dramatics Society  – is a theatrical group of Markyate folk who get together every year to bring comedy to the community.

Formed in 1993, MADS has created and performed many theatrical extravaganzas.  Performers come in all shapes and sizes, ready and willing to don ridiculous costumes, sing very silly songs and cavort about the stage in amazing displays of light and glamour, all in the name of panto…

Markyate is a small village in Hertfordshire, just off junction 9 of the M1, known for being the very first acknowledged location of a fatal motorcar accident in the UK! It may not seem much, but this village is very special to those who live, or have had the priveledge to have lived in it, it is one of the most wonderful places in the world.

MADS try and honour that sense of magic by involving many different groups and corners of the community – the local school, The Roosters (Village Social Club), The local Nisa Store, the nice men in the Pavillion Indian restaurant, the Care Group, the Brownies and Scouts/Cubs/Beavers – the list goes on.  All are a part of how MADS operates, and not only part of the fabric of the Pantos, but the reason we strive to be entertaining – for the people of Markyate.

Such is the reputation that grows through MADS, we have even had visitors from the surrounding villages – Flamstead, Redbourn, and sometimes, even St. Albans and Harpenden – yes even Harpenden!!  All are welcome – to come and watch the shows, or even to be a part of them.

This is our mission – comedy in, and for the community.
